27 May 2026

Andrew Rushton, Liberal Democrat councillor for the Whittington and Streethay ward, has been elected as Vice-Chair of Lichfield District Council at the age of 24.

“Having grown up in Lichfield for most of my life,” says Cllr Rushton, “I look forward to seeing and learning more about our district in my new role.

“I hope that my appointment will also inspire other young people to get involved and play a role in local politics. I want to use my role to show that we can all work together to bring about a fair deal for all residents of the district, irrespective of political leanings or age.”

Cllr Paul Ray, leader of the council’s Lib Dem group adds,

“I am delighted to see Cllr Rushton elected to this role. He is a hard-working councillor and works cooperatively with his fellow ward councillors and Members of Parliament of other parties to get things done for residents. He will now bring that spirit of collaboration to his role as Vice-Chair of the Council.

“Andrew is also passionate about promoting the interests of young people in our district. A young person such as Andrew being elected as Vice-Chair of the Council shows that Lichfield District Council is for everyone.”

Two other Lib Dem councillors, Hugh Ashton and John Smith were elected as Vice-Chairs of committees, demonstrating the important role played by the Liberal Democrats in Lichfield District Council.

Cllr Hugh Ashton (Stowe) was elected as Vice-Chair of the Planning Committee. Cllr Ray comments, “the Planning Committee is a very public face of the Council and Cllr Ashton’s qualities of collegiate working, experience, and thoroughness mean that we have a very capable person in this role.”

Cllr John Smith (St Johns) was elected as Vice-Chair of the Member Standards Committee, allowing him to bring his years of experience in local government to the role.
