Lib Dem Tamworth candidate slams Conservatives for dismissing concerns over Chetwynd Bridge

22 Sep 2023

It comes as the Liberal Democrats recently met with County Highways officers to discuss the future of the Chetwynd Bridge. The response was a dismissive one, where the Lib Dems were instructed to go to the County Council website where they would find everything they needed to know.

Chetwynd Bridge is vital for local residents, businesses and farmers as there is no unrestricted crossing between Tamworth and Burton. The bridge at Elford has also been closed for repairs during harvest, which has meant an almost 20 mile detour through a town centre for farmers with land on either side of the river.

The Lib Dems have now taken the lead and asked the District Council to add its collective voice to press the County to deliver a replacement bridge as soon as possible.

Sunny has personally visited the bridge and noted the grim situation for both farming traffic and local drivers and is demanding that a solution is urgently found.

Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for Tamworth, Sunny Virk said:

“Instead of stepping up and providing clarity over Chetwynd Bridge, the Conservatives have left farmers, businesses and local residents in the lurch.

“Their neglect of all those that need to use this bridge on a regular basis shows the utter disdain they hold for residents in our area.

“Attempts to provide this clarity for residents are now being dismissed and it just goes to show how out of touch they are with the needs of our community.”
