Councillor Paul Ray, Liberal Democrat councillor for Lichfield District Council, has reiterated his opposition to the plans for 140 apartments on the former Tempest Ford site following the submission of the full planning application.

Cllr Ray said:

“When proposals relating to the Birmingham Road Site redevelopment originally came before the Full Council of Lichfield District Council, the Liberal Democrat group was clear in its concerns and did not support them. We were the only political party to take that position at the time.

“Now that the detailed plans have emerged, I remain firmly opposed to this application.

“Development must be appropriate to its setting and deliver benefits for the whole community. Unfortunately, this proposal falls short on a number of key measures.

“Firstly, the sheer scale of the development in the centre of our city. The original plans were for 100 - 120 flats and now the developer is proposing 140!!

“Secondly, the proposed building heights (4 and 5 storeys) are not consistent with the agreed design code for Lichfield city centre which refers to the height being limited to 3 storeys. Buildings of this scale and height will negatively impact St John’s and Lichfield’s historic character is one of its greatest assets. New development must respect and complement the heritage environment rather than dominate it.

“I am also very concerned that no affordable housing is included within the plans. At a time when many local families and young people are struggling to access affordable housing, a development of this size must make a meaningful contribution towards the local housing needs of our residents.

“Finally, the layout creates a gated community in the heart of our city. I do not believe this is the right for Lichfield. Successful developments should be integrated into the community and create inclusive neighbourhoods.

“I am therefore be submitting my objections to the application and encourage residents who share these concerns to make their views known through the planning process.”
