Following the May 1 elections, Liberal Democrat Campaign Manager for the Lichfield District, Cllr Hugh Ashton, writes:
First, a massive thank you to all who put in so much hard work in the runup to the County elections on May 1. Locally, perhaps we didn’t do as well as we had hoped, but we certainly didn’t do badly. Our vote share went up in several divisions – even with a new party in the field – and these gains were where the effort and hard work really showed itself.
Of course, nationally, we did well – Shropshire is now under Lib Dem control, and the figures show that we are now the main opposition to Reform UK. On the national stage, the Conservatives are imploding on a daily basis, and Labour are running out of feet in which to shoot themselves. Locally, this transfers into disaffection, and the Lib Dems will continue to see lifelong supporters of the Big Two coming over to our side. Maybe, when the shine and glitter have worn off by the time of the next elections, some of those who voted for Reform UK this time will find an alternative voice in the Lib Dems.
Our increased presence in Parliament has given us increased credibility at a local level. Ed Davey is the most liked and trusted political leader in the country. We are the only party consistently demanding a return to Europe. The only party which cares about carers – and has a plan to deal with the problem of social care. The only party to stand up to the deranged policies of the current US administration. There’s never been a better time to stand up and say, “I’m proud to be a Liberal Democrat!”.
So, despite Thursday’s overall results in Staffordshire and elsewhere, we are moving forward to the future. And it’s all happening because of you. Thank you once again.
If you would like to become more involved with the Lib Dems, either as a full member or as a volunteer, please contact us to discuss where we can best work together. If you could encourage some one else to volunteer as well - even better!
Getting more people involved in our campaigning helps us be more successful in the future.
